Basemap

A synthetic demo grid, classed with equal intervals — the point is the palette against real basemap ink, not the data. Switch themes to see how much basemap the palette leaves room for.

Provenance

BuPu is ColorBrewer's blue-to-purple sequential scheme, ending in a saturated dark purple that gives the top class real presence without the alarm of red. Like the rest of the ColorBrewer sequential family it was designed for choropleth class counts of three to nine and tested for print, screen and color-vision deficiency; it carries the colorblind-safe flag.

When to use it

Good for rate maps where you want a strong top class but do not want the "danger" reading red brings — deprivation indices, turnout, subscription density. The mid-range holds up better than most cool ramps at seven classes because hue and lightness move together. Pair it with a warm or neutral basemap; on a blue-heavy style the low classes vanish into the water.
