Dark 2

ColorBrewer 2.0 (Brewer & Harrower)

Basemap

A synthetic demo grid, classed with equal intervals — the point is the palette against real basemap ink, not the data. Switch themes to see how much basemap the palette leaves room for.

Provenance

Dark 2 is the darker sibling of ColorBrewer's Set 2 — the same hue spacing, pushed down in lightness so the colors hold as thin lines and small symbols rather than only as large fills. It comes from ColorBrewer 2.0 (Brewer and Harrower, 2002). ColorBrewer flags it colorblind-safe at three to four classes only; at the eight classes this entry ships, that flag no longer applies and no CVD claim is made.

When to use it

The best ColorBrewer qualitative set for line and point work: route colors, category-coded POIs, boundary types. Its darkness means it survives on a light basemap where Set 2 washes out, and it stays distinguishable at 1-2px stroke widths. On a dark style it inverts — use Set 2 or the Tol light scheme there instead.
