A synthetic demo grid, classed with equal intervals — the point is the palette against real basemap ink, not the data. Switch themes to see how much basemap the palette leaves room for.

Provenance
PiYG is one of ColorBrewer's diverging schemes: magenta on one side, green on the other, near-white at the middle class. Brewer's diverging schemes are built so that the two arms are equal in lightness at equal distance from the center, which is what lets a reader judge magnitude on both sides against the same scale. ColorBrewer flags it colorblind-safe — the safety comes from the lightness ramp, not from the hues, which are close to the red-green confusion axis.
When to use it
For anything with a meaningful zero or a reference value where you want the two directions to feel equally weighted — swing between elections, percentage change, model residuals. Seven classes gives you three steps a side plus a neutral middle, which is usually the most a choropleth reader can hold. Because the middle class is nearly white, make sure your no-data fill is visibly different (a hatch or grey) or the two will be confused.
