Basemap

A synthetic demo grid, classed with equal intervals — the point is the palette against real basemap ink, not the data. Switch themes to see how much basemap the palette leaves room for.

Provenance

PRGn puts purple against green across a near-white center — the quietest of ColorBrewer's strongly-hued diverging schemes and the one that survives being printed on uncoated stock best. It ships in ColorBrewer 2.0 alongside BrBG and PuOr and carries the colorblind-safe flag; Paul Tol independently included a PRGn variant in his own scheme set for the same reason.

When to use it

A good default diverging ramp when your map already uses brown or orange for terrain and BrBG would collide. Suits residuals, anomalies and any signed quantity where neither direction should feel like the "bad" one. The purple arm reads slightly heavier than the green arm on screen, so if the direction that matters is the green one, consider reversing the ramp.
