A synthetic demo grid, classed with equal intervals — the point is the palette against real basemap ink, not the data. Switch themes to see how much basemap the palette leaves room for.

Provenance
PuBuGn is one of ColorBrewer's cool multi-hue sequential schemes, moving from a near-white lilac through blue to a dark blue-green. Brewer designed these ramps against printed proofs as well as screens, and the ordering holds up in grayscale and under photocopying — the tests the original ColorBrewer research ran. ColorBrewer flags it colorblind-safe.
When to use it
A quieter alternative to YlGnBu when the map already has warm content — buildings, roads, terrain tint — and you want the data layer to sit in a hue range nothing else occupies. Works well for water-adjacent quantities (rainfall, moisture, drainage) where a blue-green reading is semantically right. Seven classes is near the practical ceiling; below five the mid-blues start to look interchangeable.
