A synthetic demo grid, classed with equal intervals — the point is the palette against real basemap ink, not the data. Switch themes to see how much basemap the palette leaves room for.

Provenance
RdGy is the asymmetric member of ColorBrewer's diverging family: a full red arm against a grey one, so only one direction carries hue. ColorBrewer does NOT flag it colorblind-safe, and this entry accordingly claims no CVD safety — the red arm collapses towards the grey arm under protanopia. It is included because the grey side is genuinely useful, not because it is safe.
When to use it
The right choice when one direction is the story and the other is merely "not that" — surplus versus baseline, gain versus no-change, above versus below a threshold you do not care much about. The neutral arm keeps half the map quiet, which is exactly what you want on a busy basemap. If both directions matter equally, use PuOr or BrBG instead.
