Basemap

A synthetic demo grid, classed with equal intervals — the point is the palette against real basemap ink, not the data. Switch themes to see how much basemap the palette leaves room for.

Provenance

Algae is cmocean's chlorophyll map: a single green family from a pale, almost-white green down to a very dark forest green, with lightness falling steadily. It is the family's answer to the fact that green quantities in the ocean (and on land) are best served by a green ramp that is nevertheless perceptually uniform. MIT-licensed from matplotlib/cmocean.

When to use it

Chlorophyll, vegetation index, canopy cover, crop yield — anything where a green reading is semantically correct and a rainbow would look unserious. It is quiet enough to layer under labels and boundaries without halos in the lower classes. On a basemap that already tints parks and forests green, either desaturate the basemap or switch to a cool ramp; otherwise the reader cannot tell data from landcover.
