A synthetic demo grid, classed with equal intervals — the point is the palette against real basemap ink, not the data. Switch themes to see how much basemap the palette leaves room for.

Provenance
Ice runs near-black through navy and steel blue to an almost-white cyan — cmocean's map for sea-ice concentration, where the natural reading is "more ice is whiter". It is perceptually uniform in lightness like the rest of the cmocean family (Thyng et al., 2016) and is MIT-licensed.
When to use it
The obvious choice for ice, snow and frost cover, and a good general-purpose ramp for any variable where the top of the scale should read as bright and cold. Because it is a single cool hue family it stays out of the way of categorical overlays in warm colors. It is the best cmocean map for dark basemaps: the low classes disappear into the style and the high ones glow.
