Matter

cmocean (Thyng et al. 2016) — matter

Basemap

A synthetic demo grid, classed with equal intervals — the point is the palette against real basemap ink, not the data. Switch themes to see how much basemap the palette leaves room for.

Provenance

Matter runs pale gold through orange and crimson to a deep plum — cmocean's ramp for colored dissolved organic matter, and the warm counterpart to `dense`. Like the rest of the set it was built to be perceptually uniform and to survive grayscale printing (Thyng et al., 2016). MIT-licensed.

When to use it

A warm sequential ramp for maps that already spend their cool hues on water or basemap: sediment load, turbid inflow, dissolved organics, or any "how much stuff" measure. It sits between YlOrRd and magma in loudness — more restrained than inferno, more colorful than a single-hue ColorBrewer ramp. The plum top end reads clearly on both light and mid-tone basemaps.
