A synthetic demo grid, classed with equal intervals — the point is the palette against real basemap ink, not the data. Switch themes to see how much basemap the palette leaves room for.

Provenance
Turbid is cmocean's turbidity ramp: pale yellow-green through khaki and brown to near-black, a deliberately muddy progression that looks like what it measures. It is one of the quieter maps in the family and one of the few that reads as naturalistic rather than designed. MIT-licensed, from the cmocean package described in Thyng et al. (2016).
When to use it
Sediment, dust, soil, unpaved-surface intensity — cases where an earthy ramp is the honest visual metaphor. Its low saturation makes it unusually well behaved on a detailed basemap, since it never competes with roads or labels for attention. The dark brown top classes are close to black at small sizes; if you need the extreme to be readable, cap the ramp one class short.
