Batlow K

Crameri scientific colour maps (batlowK)

Basemap

A synthetic demo grid, classed with equal intervals — the point is the palette against real basemap ink, not the data. Switch themes to see how much basemap the palette leaves room for.

Provenance

BatlowK is batlow rebuilt to start at black instead of dark navy — the K is the printer's K, for the black plate. Crameri ships it alongside batlow and batlowW so that a figure can anchor one end of the ramp at an unambiguous extreme, which matters when the low end of the data is a hard floor rather than merely a small value. Same design method, same MIT-licensed Zenodo release, same documented color-vision-deficiency readability as the rest of the family.

When to use it

Use it on dark map styles, where batlow's navy low end merges into the basemap but true black still reads as data. Also the better pick when zero means "none at all" and you want that class to be visibly terminal. On a light basemap it is the loudest of the three batlow variants, so give it a quiet style and keep labels off the bottom two classes.
