Basemap

A synthetic demo grid, classed with equal intervals — the point is the palette against real basemap ink, not the data. Switch themes to see how much basemap the palette leaves room for.

Provenance

Oleron is Crameri's TOPOGRAPHY map, and it is built differently from the rest of the family: two perceptually uniform ramps joined at a hard break, blues for bathymetry below sea level and greens-through-tan-to-white for elevation above it. The discontinuity is the point — it puts the coastline exactly at zero instead of letting an interpolated ramp smear it across a class boundary, which is the standard failure of using an ordinary diverging map for terrain. Part of the Scientific colour maps, MIT-licensed on Zenodo.

When to use it

Use this one for elevation and depth, and effectively only for elevation and depth: the zero crossing must be sea level, or the color break lands somewhere meaningless and the map lies. Set the class breaks so that the fourth stop is exactly 0 m, otherwise the blue/green transition drifts off the coastline. It is a full-coverage terrain tint, so it wants an otherwise near-empty basemap — labels and roads go on top, nothing else.
