A synthetic demo grid, classed with equal intervals — the point is the palette against real basemap ink, not the data. Switch themes to see how much basemap the palette leaves room for.

Provenance
Roma is Crameri's red-to-blue diverging map, running dark brick through ochre and a pale yellow-green center to cyan and deep blue. It was designed as the perceptually uniform answer to the seismic-tomography convention of red-for-slow, blue-for-fast, where the older ad-hoc rainbow ramps exaggerated whichever anomaly happened to fall in the yellow band. Published in the Scientific colour maps collection, MIT-licensed on Zenodo, and documented as color-vision-deficiency readable.
When to use it
For signed quantities where both directions matter and the audience expects warm-versus-cool — temperature anomaly, velocity residual, net migration. Its center is a pale yellow-green rather than white, which is a real advantage on a light basemap: the zero class stays visible instead of dropping out. Keep the class count odd so the neutral band actually lands on zero.
