A synthetic demo grid, classed with equal intervals — the point is the palette against real basemap ink, not the data. Switch themes to see how much basemap the palette leaves room for.

Provenance
Inferno shares magma's black-to-pale-yellow trajectory but takes a hotter route through it, spending more of the ramp in saturated orange and red. It comes from the same CC0 release by Smith and van der Walt that gave matplotlib viridis, magma and plasma, and like them it is perceptually uniform in lightness and holds its ordering in grayscale.
When to use it
The strongest "heat" reading in the perceptual family — good for hazard, temperature and hotspot maps where the top of the scale should be unmistakable. It is a loud palette and needs a near-monochrome basemap; on a colorful style the mid-oranges are indistinguishable from roads and landuse. Prefer it over YlOrRd when you need more than seven classes, because the lightness ramp keeps working where ColorBrewer's class sets stop.
